• Hello. I’ve found that user nicenames, which are used to construct the URL of an author page, cannot be preceded by a hyphen (i.e. https://www.mywpsite.com/author/-username ), because the query string matcher doesn’t match this URL with the author template and leads straight to the 404 page.

Following this discovery, I searched for a page documenting what symbols are allowed or disallowed in a user nicename and couldn’t find any. Would anyone be able to clarify exactly what characters and symbols are allowed or forbidden in the user nicename? Thank you.

Does anyone know the answer? If not, where should I look to find the answer? Thank you for your consideration.

As far as I remember from the sourcecode-digging frenzy I did on the 2.9 release, it should be something like [a-z] + [_] + [-], where the “name” has to start and end with a [a-z].
