The current story listing page is /web-stories, however every story on that page immediately begins to load when the page is open.

AT the moment I have four stories listed,
Story 1 : Auto duration to next slide with videos on each page
Story 2 : Manual switching slides (with video on first slide set to loop)
Story 3 : Auto duration to next slide with videos
Story 4 : Auto duration with images.

When I land on the page I would expect to see a preview/poster frame for each story, however every story starts playing immediately (albeit muted). Story 1, 3, 4 all play through to the end, while Story 2 continues to loop on the first slide.

This causes 20+ MB of downloads on this page, not the nicest experience.

Is there anyway to avoid automatic playing of the stories on the listing page? Or to use the Cover/Poster frame on the stories instead?

The only other way I can see it working would be to remove timing on the first slide or make the first slide loop, but I think the timing is set for the whole story and not the specific slide/page in the story.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Correct, page advancement settings are global, not per page.

@luckynasan any further updates on this? I noticed that https://www.denofgeek.com/web-stories/ had a much better layout for the stories (I assume that is because it is a custom listing rather than the layout defined by the plugin itself)

This looks like a much better default layout that the current implemenation.

@justincaverygmailcom We are actively working on a suite of dedicated blocks and enhancements that allow you to:

Show the poster image by default and only playing the story upon interaction
Build more blocks to display your latest stories or a selection of your favorite ones
Add an API for themes and developers to display stories anywhere they want
Allow customization of the archives page
Enable more layouts like a stories carousel, a grid layout, and even a circles layout like on other platforms
Allow the option to open stories in a lightbox with a close button

This work is currently being tracked in this GitHub ticket, but we will be sure to provide you with any updates here as well.

@justincaverygmailcom Version 1.5.0 of the Web Stories for WordPress plugin is now available which includes various new features and different ways to display stories creatively.

Please update to the newest version and open a new support topic should you encounter any issues. Thank you!
