Visual Editor is broken

  • Visual Editor is not working. All the editing icons are gone and I can enter any text in the text window. I re-installed the latest upgrade, and cleared the browser cache. I’m new to this so maybe I’m missing something obvious?

  • There could be different reasons why this could have happened. In the meantime,

    – Deactivate all plugins, clear cookies/cache. Check also your user profile if you disabled Visual Editor. If you regain Visual Editor, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – Switch theme to WordPress default theme to rule out any theme-related problems. Clear cache/cookies. See if you get your Visual Editor back.

    For other people who encounter this in the future:

    When switching themes cured the problem, I found the cause: a missing wp_footer(); call just before </body></html> in one of my theme files.
