When I look at the health check for my website, I seem to have an error for SEO. It says that the error is: cURL error 35: SSL connect error (http_request_failed).

I ran this by my hosting provider, and they frankly gave a bit of a snarky response. I was hoping to get someone else to weigh in on this, as I suspect they’re being a bit dismissive about it:

“That looks like a communication problem between your Yoast plugin and the Ryte service. This doesn’t affect anything to do with whether the site appears on Search Engines or not.”

    Hi @designerj

Can you let us know what cURL version you have for your site? You can usually find this in WordPress by going to Settings > Site Health > Info.

According to cURL documentation, error 35 refers to the following: A problem occurred somewhere in the SSL/TLS handshake. You really want the error buffer and read the message there as it pinpoints the problem slightly more. Could be certificates (file formats, paths, permissions), passwords, and others.

From the error message, it seems that the problem is related to cURL not having certificate verification enabled OR having an older version of cURL. This guide explains more — https://yoast.com/help/common-installation-update-errors/#curl

We ask that you contact your host provider for more information. They may need to enable verification or update cURL.

If they did mention that there is a communication problem between Yoast and Ryte, this can be when the indexability check fails for several different reasons. You can learn more about it here:

Many thanks for your swift response! Interestingly, I’ve taken a look at the Health Page now, and the Curl error has mysteriously gone away! I’ve checked the curl version is now anyway: 7.19.7 NSS/3.44

Presumably that’s okay now, because the error has magically disappeared!

Thanks again, I really appreciate your feedback!
