Api key

Hi, I have an Api key and installed wordpress.com stats on a private hosting wordprress site. Apparently the Api key is for another site of mine. Does this matter? The Worpress.com Stats plugin continues to show an error even though I put in an Api key that is owned by me or is each API Key linked to a specific website.
