Is its parent directory writable by the server?

  • I am trying to upload an image but I keep getting this message and I don’t know what it means:

    Unable to create directory /u/m2011/kellj193/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?


    What does that mean exactly? My site is hosted through my school server so maybe they’ve changed something, but before I call over there I’d like to see if I can fix it. I’ve been using this server and wp for about 6 months and I’ve not had this problem. I did a complete update to the latest version of wp but that didn’t seems to help.

    I also manually created the directory, but then got this:

    The uploaded file could not be moved to /u/m2011/kellj193/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01

    Any advice?

  • Looks like a permissions problem on the server in that the user does not have write permissions on the folder wp-content/uploads/

    Try adding write permissions on that folder.

    I checked the permissions on the wp-content folder but not in the uploads folder. I’m not sure how it got changed, but that fixed it. I had to change permissions to 777 instead of 755 to get it to work however, so I’m wondering if there isn’t something buggy with my login or somewhere else?

    Hi, I am a new user. I have just started the uploading wp a few days ago. I am having the same problem. I have checked the posts above but i am not able to follow. I am also not so familiar with the function as well.

    Can you please guide me step by step to the solution?

    The permissions on the /wp-content/uploads/ directory need to be set to 777.

    After fixing, there is an other problem occurring now.
    When i create upload folder, it become: home/cambodia/public_html/wp-content/uploads and I set the permission to 777. Everything seems to work fine but when I upload my JPEG file, it gives me the warning. And also, the file is storing in the Gallery. It shows up just frame of picture but it doesn’t display at a picture on the web.

    The warning messages are:
