• Hey guys! I am BRAND new to WordPress but somewhat technically savvy. Here are the facts:

    1) I have installed WP in https://www.mydomain.com/blog
    2) I have a subdomain set up to be blog.mydomain.com
    3) In my General Settings, my “WordPress Address” is https://mydomain.com/blog
    4) In my General Settings, my “Blog Address” is https://blog.mydomain.com

Now, I understand that changing my “Blog Address” can make things complicated, but I figured the subdomain URL should be interchangable with the full https://www.mydomain.com/blog URL. And so far, everything works just as I’d hoped. I am able to post and view posts all through the subdomain URL. All the auto generated links seem to work.

The only problem is that if I have a private/draft posting and I try to preview it, I get a “you do not have permission” error or a 404 error, depending on where I start from. The weird part is that I get that error when trying to access the “subdomain” version it generates for me, e.g. https://blog.mydomain.com/blog/2010/01/16/testing123/ but if I get clever and try to hit the “subfolder” version of that URL (e.g. https://www.mydomain.com/blog/2010/01/16/testing123/), then miraculously it works.

So it seems clear that though WP has no problem working with my subdomain for my regular public postings, somehow it’s not recognizing or translating the subdomain in the same way for private/draft posts. Any experts out there know why this might be? More importantly, is there any configuration tweak I can do to resolve this?

    Thanks in advance!!!

  • I realize that I may be accused of sticking my fingers in my ears and singing “la la la” at the top of my lungs to ignore the technical details involved, but I would just set WordPress Address to https://blog.mydomain.com and be pretty confident that all my problems would go away. Even if I don’t understand exactly why your approach doesn’t work.

Sorry, I know that was probably a bit wordy. But holy crap, your suggestion worked! I don’t know why I had it in my head that I shouldn’t change the “WordPress Address,” but I changed it to match the subdomain as you suggested and voila! All seems to be right with the world.

    Thanks so much adiant!!!

“the technical details” I was referring to were in no way a criticism of your very good and detailed post. I was referring to the way that WordPress uses those two fields to redirect any alternative forms of URLs that get you to your site.
