Many WEBP images larger than JPG versions. Conditional conversion possible?

I’m using your plugin for a while now with a monthly plan and I’m very statisfied with it. Good work!

Unfortunately I recently discovered an issue with the “WEBP images” option in SPIO:

I serve my WEBP images via nginx server rules and use SPIO to optimize my images and to create the WEBP versions. I understand that some WEBP images can be larger than their JPG equivalents due to limitations of the algorithm like mentioned here.

Unfortunately SPIO does not check whether the file size of the WEBP file exceeds that of the JPG image and creates the WEBP version either way.
In my opinion this has only drawbacks. More files and less free space on your webspace and especially: Slower loading times for website visitors. Most of my WEBP images are larger – sometimes up to 100KB or more than their JPG equivalents.

So maybe we can get an option in SPIO to only create WEBP images if they are smaller in filesize than the JPG images? I remember EWWWIO having this option. Or is there already a way to do this with SPIO?

Or maybe something is bugged with the conversion on my end? I find it a little odd, that so many WEBP images are larger than their originals.

I would really like to continue using SPIO and not have to install another plugin only for creating WEBP images, so any help is appreciated. I really have to do something about this, because my blog is very image heavy and it impacts loading times and my free disk space is dwindling fast.

Here you can download an already optimized and converted example image that varies extremely in file size.
