Two WP installations – one for main site and one for blog?

do you plan on somehow combining the two? You didn’t say anything about that, so I’m assuming the two installs will be totally separate?

I run 5 or 6 installs off of my host with no problems…..they don’t really interface in any way other than linking to each other….

If you plan to share posts between the two or something, that is a bit more work I believe. If not, just install each into it’s own respective sub folder/domain and give each its own DB and you are golden.

Thanks RVoodoo – Thanks! I don’t plan on combining the two. The only thing I can think that I might want to do is pull a feed of blog posts from the blog and display them on the “main site” in a sidebar or something. But I think there is probably a plugin out there that would let me do this?

Ipstenu: thank you. I just took a look at the WordPressMU site. Would you be able to tell me what the benefit of using it in my situation would be? Is it just the ability to manage both sites through a single interface?

Well … yeah ?? Don’t worry, from our end it SHOULD be pretty much the same as any other upgrade. 3.0 is the big WP/WPMU marriage. You upgrade each WP and WPMU sites to 3.0 and magically it’s the same. Yay.

I need to suck it up and upgrade when it tells me to. I just dread the whole process (too afraid to use the automatic upgrade function, so it tends to take a while with the backups and everything).

After a couple of bad experiences with hackers….I back everything up weekly.

So when a new WP version comes out…..I just use the auto upgrade now ASAP, and have never had anything go south….

Yes you do. And always make a backup.

Converting to WPMU is harder than upgrading to WP 3.0 becuase of how the blog is moved to wp_#_<foo> and yet the wp_users stays where it is. I’ve toyed around and actually as of 2.9.1 it’s a lot easier to convert.

As we wander off topic … It’ll probably be ‘Make the biggest, most complicated site the ‘main’ site and then import the satellite sites.’ Merging multiple blogs is always harder, due to user bases ??

Wondering how this will affect wp-hive users…It’s working brilliantly at the moment!

wp-hive works with WP3 but you cannot use the Multi User, it is one or the other …. on one domain I use WP3 with Multi User and another I use WP-hive

though I am currently considering converting the wp-hive sites to WP3 multi user, now that I have a plugin for the /blog aspect
