My tags are getting indexed in Google though they are not in the sitemap and I have set Yoast to not show tags in the search results. I can see in Google Console when I view a crawled page that Google sees my tags marked noindex as <meta name=”robots” content=”index, follow”> ??

I only have around 12 tags that I do want indexed. I linked to one that should not be indexed as an example. There are currently hundreds of tags that are being indexed that I do not want to be indexed. I recently figured out how to get my staging site off of Google but I can’t password protect my tags like I did with the staging site. Please help!

  • Hello @summeryulenutrition!

I checked the source code of the URL you provided and can confirm that it contains a "robots" content="index, follow" meta tag. Can you please confirm if you’ve set it to noindex properly by following the steps in this kb article?

Under Search Appearance Taxonomies, I do have “Show Tags in Search Results?” set to no.

I noticed this morning that I do have some tags set to noindex, such as https://summeryule.com/tag/air-fry/

I would love to know why the noindex is working for some but not others. Thank you again for your help

    Hi @summeryulenutrition,

    Thank you for your reply.

The setting under SEO → Seach Appearance → Taxonomies is the default for all, but can still be changed per tag. If you go to a tag and edit it, you should see the Yoast metabox, please check if it is configured differently than the default in the advanced section. If you don’t see the Yoast metabox, please check if the metabox is enabled for the Tags taxonomy on the same settings page as the default settings.

    Hi Jeroen,

Yes, I was aware that I could change the settings for individual tags. I did that for the 10-12 tags that I wanted indexed, such as this one: https://summeryule.com/tag/low-carb/

From the tags page (under “Posts”) everything that I want set to noindex appears to be set correctly. That is not what I’m seeing on Google Console, unfortunately.

I’m beginning to suspect that it might just be my older tags that are not coming up correctly on Google. I tried clearing the cache for some of the tag pages that are supposed to be noindex but it did not help.

I figured out that I can fix the issue by going into “Edit” for each tag and hitting update (w/o making changes). Then I can remove the individual link on the remove outdated content page on Google Search Console. There are over 700 tags, so I am hoping there is an easier fix to this.
