• I noticed that the file wp-settings.php in version 5.5 has changed, if you want to manually update via ftp, note that besides uploading the two folders wp-admin and wp-content then You must upload the wp-settings.php file to the old file outside of the website’s root directory for it to work properly.

    More than that file in WP installation root had changed. A normal part of a manual update is to copy ALL root installation files from the downloaded and extracted .zip file to your WP installation, replacing nearly all existing files except wp-config.php and .htaccess and any non-WP files.
