    That error usually means your server just timed out waiting for the upload to complete.
    First think I would check is if Async/Background optimization is enabled, you can check the status of that on the EWWW IO settings (in the Optimization Status header, toward the right side).

    Settings->EWWW Image Optimizer
    The Optimization Status is the big section at the top, above all the settings. There should be 2-3 columns, the last one, at the bottom, will say “Background optimization (faster uploads):” followed by the status of said feature…
