    Shortly after I upgraded to 2.9, a very strange thing happened: Things were working fine until, somehow, comments that I had approved ended up in the trash. I restored them and then, later that day, when I tried to view my site all I got was a blank page. (I have no idea if these two things are related, but they happened so close together in time that I figured it’s worth asking if they might be.) I can log into the admin page and everything there seems to work fine.

    According to my hosting company, WordPress is not installed correctly and they suggest that I uninstall and install again, but they only have version 2.7, with an upgrade to version 2.8.4, and I am just wondering if there is a way I might address this other than having to reinstall, which I am guessing–and please tell me if I am wrong–will then require me to reinstall the theme and all the plugins I am using.

    Thanks.

  • Try uploading all the core files again, and if that doesn’t work, try unloading your DB and importing it into a fresh install.

    You might try re-uploading all of your WP core files– everything except wp-contents, basically. You can get strange effects if files don’t upload correctly.

    Did your host happen to tell you why they think WP isn’t installed correctly?

    apljdi: No, they didn’t tell me why. But please clarify something for me, since I am relatively new to this: How do I upload the core files without overwriting wp-contents? Do I need to back wp-contents up somewhere else and then put it back after I am done uploading the core files.

    Thanks!

    wordpress core files don’t come with any wp-content files except themes like default and classic, which you should never edit.

    one awesome feature of WP is the upgrade process, that when you update the core files, it never overwrites your customizations, so there’s nothing to worry about.

    backup before doing so first though, always always back up.

    My first reactions is “It does if you’ve edited core files” but since I never use built in updater feature maybe I missed this. Are you saying that the built in update feature diffs the existing directories against clean core files and refuses to overwrite user edits? Or do you mean that it won’t overwrite plugins and themes? If the former, I’m impressed. If the latter, then your statement is very, very misleading.

    @richnewman,

    Its pretty easy to upload individual files and directories if you use an FTP client like FileZilla. That’s exactly the kind of thing FTP was built to do, really.

    Done and done, and everything seems to be working fine. Thanks so much!

    What was the solution?

    I just upgraded to 2.9 and get this message when I attempt to logon

    Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 30720 bytes) in /home/scotsman/public_html/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/admin/manage-images.php on line 42

    Any ideas anybody?

    jdingman: I followed the directions for upgrading to 2.9: deleted the core files, downloaded 2.9 and the copied the core files back to my server. Everything now works fine. Again, my thanks.

    @gordoncorsie,

    You have a different problem than the one that started the thread. Disable, or remove the nextgen plugin if you can’t get in to disable it, and start a new thread if that doesn’t fix things.
