Client cannot sign in but I can; also cannot reset password

Hi, I’m helping a client with their website (note that I’m not a developer; I’m sort of going beyond my usual role to help with these website issues.) The issue is that I can log in with the correct credentials but my client can’t.
I’ve already made sure that they’re using the correct login, that they haven’t accidentally pasted in any extra spaces, that they’re not accidentally on WordPress.com, etc.
The client has now told me that they can’t reset their password, either. They get a message stating that their “email address is already taken”. I logged in to change their password myself, and I encountered the same message upon hitting ‘Update’ – the password just will not change.
Can someone please tell me what might be going on and provide some actionable advice I can either follow or pass along to my client?
