I’ve had PowerPress’s Feed Episode Maximizer enabled for years since my podcast episode posts tend to have a great deal of text. At some point, the Maximizer feature seems to have stopped working – my feed currently contains the complete text from every one of the podcast’s episodes, and its XML file is hovering at around 1MB.

I’ve tried disabling and re-enabling the Maximizer, but that seems to have no effect.

Possibly related: I have “show the most recent” set to 500 episodes even though the maximum claims to be 300. This still seems to be working, as Apple Podcasts and other podcatchers show all 308 or so episodes of the podcast.

My site is self-hosted and uses CloudFlare for caching. I use Google FeedBurner for feed redirection, although I’ve been doing all of my troubleshooting directly on my site’s feed. PowerPress and all other plug-ins are up to date.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

    Apple’s max is (was) 300.

Are you having any trouble with the feed now? Or just wondering about the size of the feed?

Thanks for the quick reply, Mike!

My feed is behaving at the moment, but earlier today it wasn’t showing my newest episode (which I’d posted last night). During that period, FeedBurner gave me an error message about the feed being unusable due to it being over 1MB.

Disabling and then re-enabling CloudFlare caching of my site seemed to fix the problem, but I’d been poking at settings for a while at that point, so I’m not sure whether that was directly related or not.

Although everything is working now, I’m concerned that the problem may return since my XML feed is still so large.

You should think about leaving feedbuner.

We recommend you do not use FeedBurner, there’s no real need to use it. You can learn more about using feedBurner for podcasting here: https://create.blubrry.com/manual/syndicating-your-podcast-rss-feeds/feedburner-for-podcasting/ (explains in great detail why you don’t need feedburner)

I’ll check those links out; thank you! If FeedBurner’s not helping, removing it from the situation to make things simpler sounds great.

As far as the Feed Episode Maximizer feature – might FeedBurner be interfering with that, or do you think the problem could have a different origin? I’d like to shrink my XML feed to improve performance if possible, and that feature seems a good way to do so.

    Hello @gjallerbru,

Yes FeedBurner has some features that take the title and then inject new RSS tags for podcasting. its an option in FeedBurner you have to turn off. All the cool features they built back in 2005 were pretty pointless by 2008, and the service has not updated since about that time, sadly.

    Thanks,
    Angelo
