I had Google Site kit working on one server but hosting company has moved my site for me to a new server.

Now Google Sitekit fails with a 404 error after I log in with Google/Gmail account.

I have tried disable and re-enable. No joy.

I have uninstalled the plugin and reinstalled. No joy.

When I go back to the dashboard it wants me to wants me to start setup again.

Site health check is clean other a couple of themes.

    Any thoughts please?

@brookie Thank you for all the details you provided.

Your site health info is showing your WordPress is in a subdirectory. However, it appears your wp-content folder are not in the subdirectory which may be the reason you are encountering the error. Could you check your setup with your host and inform us of your findings?

This is the response from the host:

We place our admin files in a protected /wp directory, this doesn’t affect the vast majority of plugins or third party tools.

I think the issue might be solvable by changing your website URL in sitekit to be [domain name]/wp – it can then connect to the XMLRPC file and should work, are you able to try that?

I’m not convinced, and there is no way I can see to set the site URL, nor would I expect to have to.

@brookie Many thanks for the update. Can you try and follow the inform me if you’re able to proceed with setup?
    1. Open a browser incognito window.
    2. Login to your site and from your Site Kit dashboard click on your email at the top right
    3. Disconnect your site
    4. In the next screen click on “Reset Site Kit
    5. Install & activate the “Health Check & Troubleshooting” plugin
    6. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
    7. From there click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “Site Kit by Google”
    8. Attempt Site Kit setup once more

You can exit troubleshooting mode afterwards.

I’m stuck at point 2. There is no email at the top right to click on!

@brookie You can remove Site Kit account permissions using this link as an alternative. After doing so you can reset Site Kit and proceed with step 5.

If using the method above to remove Site Kit permissions note that other Site Kit installs on any other sites may also need to be reset.

I’ve removed Site Kit access for the gmail account, but I am not seeing the Reset Site Kit button.

I only see Dashboard under site kit no other sub-menu items.

@brookie In that case go ahead and attempt setup while using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin in troubleshooting mode, step 5 onwards.

Still goes to 404 – no error message – only difference is that it’s the default theme.

@brookie Many thanks for the update, and perseverance as we investigate this issue. On your new server do you have ModSecurity or any Web Application Firewall on which you can temporary disable while setting up Site Kit? Your host should be able to assist.

Thanks. I have asked them and will come back to you.

I have also asked if they know of any other customers who have the plug-in working (I suspect not!).
