• Hi everyone,

Im teaching myself how to run WP and this website. So far have usually found answers through these forums so thank you!

My homepage is returning to 404 error.

All the instructions I see are to redirect a page to the homepage but wondering if I should be doing something else since its my page URL that cannot be found.

Recently performed some major updates. Worked fine for 12 hours and then just stopped working.

I have reset Permalinks through WP admin, installed a redirect plugin (doesn’t help if wanting to redirect to the homepage).

I can’t work out how to alter the .htaccess (through CPanel) and not really confident to do it.

    Any other suggestions?

Thanks so much for reading and assisting with this error.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Is your homepage currently set to display your latest posts at Settings > Reading in your Dashboard?

If so, it will display that until you have at least 1 publicly published post.

    Hi James,

its currently set to A static page (select below) – but then of the two options (home page & posts page) nothing appears to be selected.

The option of the homepage doesn’t seem to be there – just the other pages (about us, gallery, contact us etc).

Should I change one of these settings?

I’m getting a security error on Chrome. The message indicates your cert expired 13 days ago. If I change the url to http I get a redirection error.

Have you set your URL to https in WP settings? Have you modified your htaccess file? Please disable your redirection plugin. It’s not the solution for this problem.

    There’s your problem. ??

Make sure that your desired Home page is publicly published, not private or saved as a draft.

    Hi James and Tim,

Our SSL cert expired – it should be back up and running by now since I reactivated it. Ive also disabled the 404 plug in.

James the homepage was in draft! Not sure ?? how I did that since its been up and running for a number of years lol but thanks. And the static page setting now says “home” so thats all fixed.

Its still not returning a result when I view through WP Admin or just log out and search the URL. Maybe just give it a few mins??

Thanks so much for your help, Im in panic mode.

Are you using any sort of caching plugin, or do you see a “Clear/Purge Cache” button in your Dashboard or admin bar? If so, would you please try clearing the cache?

Note: You do not need to install a caching plugin at this point just to clear a cache you don’t have. If you don’t have a caching plugin or a way to clear a server-level cache, just say so. ??

I do have both of those options. I have Autoptimize which has a clear cache function (and should do it automatically I believe) and also in the admin bar under “Performance” I can purge cache.

It used to display the 404 message but now safari is just saying cannot open page.

Just gave it a few minutes but just checked, still not working.

Hm, your SSL certificate is still expired, so I wonder if that may be playing a part here: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=originpools.com.au&hideResults=on

Have you checked with your hosting provider’s support?

    Thread Starter originpools

    (@originpools)

I will give them a call now ?? its possible the SSL hasn’t updated its supposed to take 24-48 hours.

Ill give hosting provider a call and see what ideas they have!

I don’t have good news. Hosting company seem to think the SSL is up and running, and the homepage still isn’t working.

Would appreciate if you had any more thoughts on this one, if not, I understand!

Hm, you might want to give this link to your hosting provider: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=originpools.com.au&hideResults=on

As of 1 minute ago, the SSL certificate is still expired.
