    Hi Support,

    The plugin was working great until the latest WordPress update.
    We use Gmail and have followed the setup instructions to a tee.
    Now we are receiving the following dashboard message regarding the plugin:

    “EMAIL DELIVERY ERROR: the plugin WP Mail SMTP v2.1.1 logged this error during the last time it tried to send an email:

    There was a problem while retrieving Auth for gmail: Could not json decode the token
    Please review your WP Mail SMTP settings in plugin admin area. Consider running an email test after fixing it.”

    We have tried removing the connection and then re-establishing it but after a day it reappears.

    Any ideas on how to resolve this?

    Hi Mark,

    this error message usually comes up, when there is a plugin conflict. Some other plugin is probably also using the Google API library, but it’s using the older version of the library which causes issues.

    Are you maybe using the “Simple Calendar” plugin? Or any other plugin that also allows you Google integrations. If you are not sure which one that might be, you can post a list of all plugins your site is using and we can take a look.

    Hi, I just performed an UpdraftPlus backup and noticed this error in the log recorded by the plugin.

    PHP event: code E_WARNING: json_decode() expects parameter 1 to be string, array given (line 177, wp-content/plugins/updraftplus/includes/Google/Auth/OAuth2.php) (Jun 16 20:38:12)

    But we have had UpdraftPlus working in conjunction with WP Mail SMTP previously without any issues.

    Hi Mark,

    do you have UpdraftPlus configured with Google in some way (to sync the backups or something)?

    This error that you get: “There was a problem while retrieving Auth for gmail: Could not json decode the token”, do you get it each time you send an email? If you send an Email Test in our plugin’s settings does this error occur?

    Maybe it occurs just on specific emails…

    Do you have UpdraftPlus configured to send you emails when backups are created?

    Hi, I have the same issue. Git the same dashboard message.
    I do use UpdraftPlus and it is configured to use Google Drive as the remote storage.
    Any idea of how to solve the message:

    Hi Gregor,

    The error is persistent in the dashboard!
    I have tested several emails and they are being sent. But it is a concern that the error persists given we haven’t changed anything recently and have been using UpdraftPlus for more than a year now without any errors.

    So would really like to get to the bottom of this for piece of mind.

    Hi Mark,

    In version 2.1.0 we fixed the debug error not showing for some mailers (Gmail included).

    So, what I think is happening is that this error was present for the UpdraftPlus email notification for a long time, but it is only now showing up because we fixed the error display.

    UpdraftPlus or any other plugin that is using outdated Google API library code is causing issues for our plugin’s Gmail mailer. We are always trying to use the latest versions of libraries.

    We are working on eliminating these 3rd-party library conflicts in one of our future releases, but I can’t give you an ETA yet.

    I’ll try to update this post once the plugin update with this fix will be released.

    Could this be the problem now also being reported by WP Mail SMTP plugin as listed below, it sort of coincides with your recent update?

    I am receiving the same error notice, and I do use Updraft Plus to back up to G-Drive. Do I understand correctly that we must wait for another WP Mail SMTP update before this error notice is fixed?

    Hi Mark and Anne,

    yes, you are correct. We are working on a solution to this problem and it will be available in one of the next plugin updates. We don’t have an exact ETA yet.

    There is simply nothing we can do at this time if another plugin is using the same 3rd party library, but an older version of it. Their older library gets loaded first and breaks the functionality of sending Gmail emails from our plugin.

    This is not just a problem from UpdraftPlus, there are many other plugins like that. “Simple calendar” is one that we experienced the same issues with as well.

    As I understand, the UpdraftPlus backups should still be uploaded to your Google account and everything should function OK. The only thing that is failing is the notification email from UpdraftPlus. Right?

    Yes we do. Does this mean our regular contact form will not work or just the notification from updraft?
