Sense of impending doom as I try to put blog in root

    Dear fellow members,

    My webhost, otherwise a dependable firm, has put my blog in a folder called ‘wordpress’, producing the somewhat unattractive url charlotteneumann.com/wordpress.

    I want to move to another domain (with the same webhost) anyway, but this time I want to make sure my blog goes into the root folder (to wit: noblebrute.com). I’ve written to my webhost about it, but they’ve given me a set of instructions far above noob level: make a SQL database and other alien talk.

    Does anybody here have experience with transferring a blog to the root from another folder? Can you give me any hints?

    Two different animals here: one, moving to root, and two, moving to a different domain.

    If you are changing domains and want to keep all your old posts, you are going to have to edit the database. See Moving WordPress ? WordPress Codex for instructions on moving domains. See Installing WordPress ? WordPress Codex to install brand new at your new domain in root (without the wordpress folder), and then restore your databse from the original blog after changing the URLs for the domain change and the URLs for the root change.

    Thanks, songdog. Your help is greatly appreciated, though it has not yet dispelled the sense of doom. I’m reading the texts, and I’m also now reading my webhosts PLESK manual, all of which is a huge amount of technical data to take in for one of such limited intellectual abilities.

    There is bound to go something terribly wrong at some point, isn’t there?

    webhost’s – little spelling error. Spelling is about all I can do, so needed to get that right

    If you invite doom, doom will happen. Seriously, it’s not that big of a deal, and the docs walk you through it all.

    Thanks, Songdog. However, I’ve been at it these past hours, and making zero progress, because I can’t even get past the first hurdle: accessing PLESK. Believe me, the world is a confusing place for the computer-barely-literate. Will ask in a new thread, since I can’t find answer on the net.
