• Hi,

I’m building a website and I’d like to add a forum section. To do so, I want to put it in a subdomain, like “forum.mysite.com”.

I’ve watched and read some tutorials I found (a lot actually, because it’s starting to piss me off!) and read the WordPress codex, but for some obscure reasons, I can’t seem to make it work.

I enabled the multisite in wp-config.php, then followed the steps for wp-config.php and .htaccess, I added a * as subdomain with my IPv6 address through the dashboard of my webhost (LWS) but when I go back to my WordPress dashboard and add a new site, nothing works the way it’s supposed to.
The new site never shows up in the network menu (the one at the top with the main domain and the other ones) and when I go to My sites, the new site “forum.mysite.com” is listed but when I click on it, well the first time I had a “File not found” page and the second time I had the landing page of my webhost like I have to run a new installation of WordPress on the subdomain. But I want to run the same WordPress installation through the whole network (and that’s what it’s supposed to do, right?).

I’m completely lost. I tried and tried again and again, but no, I suck at it.
Do I have to create the subdomain in my webhost dashboard? And when? Before or after I create the new site in the WordPress dashboard? And if I don’t have to, what am I doing wrong?

Thank you for your help! I’m so tired of this…

  • What is LWS?

You forgot to include a link to your site…

I suspect it’s either a DNS issue or a control panel issue but I can’t look at your site and can’t look up your DNS records either.

    Hi,

LWS is the name of my webhost (I’m in France).
I contacted the support and now it’s working.

Turned out that I had to delete the newly created subdomains directories from my server (I couldn’t choose the root directory public_html when creating the subdomains) so the mainsite and the subsites would run from the same WordPress install.

    Thanks for your answer!
