• Hello,
A client of mine who runs the site that’s giving problems, upgraded the standard (free version) of Jetpack to the premium version on his site (URL shown below). He had problems with it and requested Jetpack to revert his Jetpack account to the standard free version. He’s contacted Jetpack, but gets the run around unfortunately.

Since then, admins – when logged in go to the dashboard as usual – but when the ‘visit site’ link is pressed they are logged-out when they go to the front end of the site.

I’ve gone through the usual processes – cleared cache, site cookies etc. in the browser, but no joy. The site URL address has been checked in the settings section and the two addresses for the site are correct and exactly the same. No joy. I then checked the config.php file and added the lines required to make sure that both addresses were included, but still no joy.

I changed the name ‘plugins’ to ~plugins to stop the site loading all plugins and the problem disappeared. I then reverted the name back to the original, so that when the site was loaded again all plugins, as I needed, were shown as ‘deactivated’. My plan was to activate each plugin in turn to find if there was a problem with one of them, however even with all the plugins shown as deactivated the problem returned.

The strange thing is that one admin (me) can occasionally go to the site from the site’s Dashboard without getting logged-out, but this is only occasionally, for the remainder of the time both admins (myself and the site owner) have the same problem. The site owner, has the problem permanently.

I’m out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Gwilym.

  • Have you checked if the site uses any MU plugins, or whether there are code files saved in non-standard directories?

    Thanks carike,

I haven’t checked for MU plugins. However by changing the plugin folder name to ~plugins on the server, thereby inhibiting the site from loading any plugins at all, the log-in problem disappeared. When the plugin folder name was changed back to the original the site loaded the plugins, but as is normal, they all showed as deactivated in the back office. So any MU plugins would have been deactivated as well. Before any plugins were reactivated, it was noticed that the log-in problem had returned, after the plugin folder name was restored. So I think we’re on the wrong path there.

Code files in non-standard directories is highly improbable, as no work has been done to create such directories – unless they’ve been automatically created by some other coding, like a rogue plugin, however I could investigate that. Which code files would you suspect carike? As it would make them easier to trace by file name.

The big clue is that this problem only arose when the Jetpack account of the site owner (the other admin account) upgraded to the premium version, and then decided to revert back to the standard free version. Jetpack have been less than helpful in solving this problem, and have given no indication that the problem has arisen in the wake of messing with their account/ plugin. But they wouldn’t would they? Who wants blame attributed to them?!

I’ll keep plugging away (excuse the pun). There must be a solution, however the feedback is extremely sparse on this forum. You are the only responder so far.

    Thanks again . . .

    G.
