• I would like a homepage with text which is displayed when the site\blog is first opened, which I believe must be a static page. But I would also like a list of recent posts in the sidebar. It seems that one can only have one or the other?

If possible, how does one go about setting it up?

    Thanks in advance.

It depends on the theme you are using to determine if you have these capabilities out of the box. A URL to your site would help, or the name of your theme.

Basically, you will choose a Static Page in the settings of your site, however, there may be an option to choose a different template.
Edit your home page, and look at the options on the right hand column to see if you can change your template. If so, pick one that says Sidebar, then go to :
Appearance –> Widgets –> and add the Recent Posts widget to that space (if available).

Otherwise, you will need to create a new template for your homepage in order to add it.

    Thank you.

At the moment I’m doing everything locally on my PC to get the feel of things. Therefore I don’t have a definitive template, I’m experimenting with various template. Perhaps you know offhand of a template which has the capability?

    Depends on the theme.
    Typical names are sidebar.php, tpl-sidebar.php, single.php
