• I was setting up a new subsite, and have a user who is the Administrator for that subsite.

They are trying to add a new user who exists on the Multisite as a user.

But the autocomplete for the user doesn’t work. It never comes up with the list of possible users.

If I make them a superadmin then it works.

This is very weird. Is there a tick box somewhere that can turn this on and off?

  • No, there’s no tick box…

I think that ability is reserved just for super admins else you’d have site admins joining users (slamming) from other sites within the network to their own site.

That’s a bad idea where the site admin might discover a user elsewhere and ‘join’ them to the site then possibly find their info and spam them or sign them up for features they never wanted.

I’m gonna figure that might be useful for admins who have second sites though.

Maybe WordPress knows to allow that action for admins in that case as it does for super admins since a super admin has access to the whole site and is usually someone with more responsibility for the system as a whole. Polylang sites, forums, and cart sites come to mind as good reasons to allow that feature for multiple site admins but I’ve never tried it.

Also, there may be user role editor plugins that will allow an admin the role to bring in other site users.

You or another super admin might join the user to the other site in an admin role to see if it will then allow the action you wish. Try it and see if you wish.
