• I tried to update to 2.8.6 automatically but it failed, so I FTP’ed it instead, forgetting to NOT upload the wp-content folder so everything I had in it got deleted.

Luckily I have a backup from just a few days ago, so I uploaded my plugins etc again.

But now, when I want to upgrade/add new plugins, it asks me for FTP details- before it would just upgrade/add automatically, without me having to enter FTP details.

I tried to change persmissions on wp-content and wp-content/plugins to 767 and 777 but it didn’t change. Also tried 777 on wp-content/upgrade.

I’m not too happy about having “777” as I’ve heard that leaves the folders wide open to the world, but it didn’t solve the problem setting them to 777 anyway – so, what can I do?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

Assign 766 recursive permissions to wp-content folder. Disable all the plugins and have a check with upgrade.

    Thanks,

I didn’t get a chance to try out 766 – I decided to wipe it all and reinstall the WordPress package from the VPS control panel. It turns out that the owner of everything was not “www-data” as it is when it’s created by the server (I’m logging in at FTP with a different name).

After reinstalling it all, WordPress will both “add new” and “upgrade automatically” (when the right permissions are set, 766) without FTP connection information.

    Hope this helps somebody else.

By the way, setting 766 on one of my plugins, makes it disappear from wordpress “plugin” page completely, as if it doesn’t exist.
