Hello – I’ve been using UpdraftPlus for a few months, sending the backup files to a folder in Dropbox. It is set up with a daily files backup (retain 2 scheduled backups) and weekly database backup (retain 2 scheduled backups). It was working fine until a couple weeks ago. Now for some reason the older files are not being automatically deleted from Dropbox and I run out of space until I manually delete them.

“Delete local backup” is checked in the advanced settings.

Any thoughts on why this is happening now and any way to fix it?

    Thank you!

    Hi,

Please could you send us a full copy of the backup log?
Please use an online service such as Dropbox or Pastebin, and post the link here.

Thank you for the help, Bryle!

Let’s see if this link works for the backup log file I uploaded to Dropbox:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/4leaqp1o2z56lwo/Updraft_log.d8155cb2893f.txt?dl=0

    A couple things:
    – I’ve changed the settings in WordPress to retain only 1 (instead of 2) scheduled backup of the files and the database, to see if that might help.
    – I deleted most of the older files in Dropbox because I was running into space limitations (I’m on the free plan). It should be more clear within a day or 2 whether the change to the settings fixed the problem or not.

But if you can see anything in the log file that would help, I’d greatly appreciate your taking a look.

    Thanks again,
    -Marcy

I’m having the same issue. Log file reports deletion of old backups from Dropbox was successful but they are still there.

Any suggestions on how to fix?

    Thanks!

Same here, even from last year backups are still there.

I’m still having the same issue as well.

The current log file for my account:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/1gmfjc0n13fl6rq/Updraft_log.2304dd264979.txt?dl=0

Within the log file I see lines like:
    0147.361 (0) Examining (for files) backup set with nonce=2bfa72f91c6a, datestamp=1586903537 (Apr 14 2020 22:32:17)

    0147.984 (0) Dropbox: delete succeeded

However, the delete did not actually succeed.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Update: Looking more closely at the files, it appears to be deleting older copies of the plugins file, but not the other 4 (uploads, uploads2, themes, others).

@rmr65 and @moxie, please can you send us copy of your backup log so I can check?

    Hi Bryle!

Yes, that’s what started this whole thing, finding out that my Dropbox account ran out of space.

I have since been manually deleting older backup files, so my account no longer runs out of space. The problem still remains that UpdraftPlus is not automatically deleting most of the older files. As noted above, the “plugins” file is getting deleted while the others are not.

Here is the current log file:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/sxj9muzsy8b63ix/Updraft_log.77b47871ca17.txt?dl=0

And I just noticed that these lines actually show what’s going on:

    0101.150 (0) Delete file: backup_2020-04-18-1751_All_Electric_Project_126599ebc9c7-plugins.zip, service=dropbox
    0101.151 (0) Delete file: backup_2020-04-18-1751_All_Electric_Project_126599ebc9c7-themes.zip, service=dropbox
    0101.152 (0) Delete file: backup_2020-04-18-1751_All_Electric_Project_126599ebc9c7-uploads.zip, service=dropbox
    0101.153 (0) Delete file: backup_2020-04-18-1751_All_Electric_Project_126599ebc9c7-uploads2.zip, service=dropbox
    0101.154 (0) Delete file: backup_2020-04-18-1751_All_Electric_Project_126599ebc9c7-others.zip, service=dropbox
    0101.159 (0) Dropbox: request deletion: backup_2020-04-18-1751_All_Electric_Project_126599ebc9c7-plugins.zip
    0101.739 (0) Dropbox: delete succeeded

The “request deletion” command is only for the plugins.zip file. So something is wrong with UpdraftPlus in that it’s not requesting the other files also be deleted. Am I reading that right?

Any insight you can provide and suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,

I set Updraft to backup daily and keep 3 copies. But, the 4th copy should have been deleted but was not. Instead 3 of 5 files remain. I have enough space in Dropbox so I know that is not the issue.

Here is the pastebin of the log from 20 April
    https://pastebin.com/60f2LCsr

Have followed this for 2 days now.

Updraft keeps the 3 backups, as I set it to.

But in Dropbox it only removes 2 of the 5 zipped files and 3 remain for each day not included in the 3 to keep.

Obviously, very soon these will pile up and I will run out of space.

Please provide a fix for this issue.

    Thanks!

Updraft is only deleting the database and plugins zipped files. The remaining 3 zipped files, Other, Uploads, Themes are not being deleted.

I have followed this for a few days now and confirm this is what happens at least in my situation.

Hopefully a fix can be found for this because meantime I have to manually delete the other files, which is certainly not ideal and also not what I would expect from the plugin.

    Thanks.

    Hi

I also have this issue. Everything was working great until I received a notice from Dropbox that I was close to exceeding my account allowance. I did have backups set to retain the most recent 5, I knocked that down to 2, but I just checked an it is still retaining them on Dropbox. Not sure if it is just certain files as some others have reported.

    Tx!

    Hello,
I have had exactly the same problem for several weeks. All the backups seem to be going normally but the old backups do not erase on Dropbox which ends up saturating.

The log file indicates that the deletion on dropbox ended successfully but when I go to the directory the files are still there.

By looking more closely at the log file, I notice that the first backup pluginand txt file is actually deleted from dropbox but that stops there. The other erasures are not made.

I’m having this exact same problem also with the same pattern reported in the log file as others have posted.

When the max number of retained database backups is reached, it is correctly deleting the oldest database backup.

HOWEVER, when the max number of Files is reached, ONLY the “backup_…-plugins.zip” file is actually deleted from Dropbox. The themes, uploads, and others zip files are remaining left behind on Dropbox and therefore causing Dropbox to fill up unless they are manually deleted from the Dropbox site.

My server is running PHP 7.3, and Updraft, WordPress and all plugins and theme are up to date.

    Please help. Thank you.
