New Widgets: Plugin vs Theme

  • Now that we can created widgets for the Widget Area (using the class WIDGET_NAMES extends WP_Widget syntax), how do we publish these?

    Previously widgets would be ‘small’ plugins, to be published in the plugin directory and clearly managed through the plugin management. But these new widgets are part of the Theme and no longer distinct little ‘apps’.

    Or have I missed something completely; believing, as I do, that th eonly place they can go is in functions.php?

    Any thoughts?
