  • Check your .htaccess file(s).

I’m really new at this what am I looking for in the .htaccess files

Ok, first see if it’s even that causing the problem. Rename your .htaccess file to something like htaccess.txt and then try to access your admin again.

ok I checked it and that’s not the problem

Ok then, give us a clue. When you say you’ve been working on it, what have you been doing exactly?

    Changing Permalinks?
    Changing the URL?
    Editing your theme?
    Installing Plugins?
    Something else?
    All/none of the above?

I was posting pages on social bookmarking and installed a plugin called socializeit but it wasn’t working right so I removed the script from the sidebar file. I put my blog into a system where others can post on my blog and when I put this plugin in and tried to use it to bookmark my posts it kept coming up with other posts that weren’t mine, so I did some trail and error by putting those posts in pending status to see if the socializeit would come up with the correct page I wanted, this only worked when I put all others pending, so after messing around with it for awhile I gave up, put all the posts back to published and removed the button from sidebar, I didn’t remove the plugin right away but I have today and that didn’t help.
I also changed the permalink to custom /%postname%/
I changed the new user default role from subscriber to author in the general setting.
That’s all I can think of at the moment, thanks for your help

    Just a few things then!

Assuming you can’t access any admin pages, I’d probably start with the plugins directory. FTP into your site. Go into the wp-content folder and rename the ‘plugins’ directory to ‘plugins2’.

Try and login. If you have success, you’ve found the problem, so you’ll need to rename your plugins2 directory back, then using a similar process of elimination, hunt down the offending plugin located inside that directory.

If still can’t login though, check your wp-admin folder. Presumably it is still all intact? Delete it entirely and re-upload it from a fresh copy of WordPress, just in case.

If still no joy, I’d probably fire off an email to the webhost, just to see if it’s some bizarre mod_security issue, blocking you from accessing the site.

Report back how you get on. I’m off to bed now, but I’m sure someone will chime in with other ideas if required. Best of luck!

In the meantime I tracked down the error log entry for when this first happened, does anyone know if this is significant, here it is:
