  • Hi @whane-the-whip

MetaSlider doesn’t do any sort of image optimization, compression or the like.

We do have a very simple cropping mechanism that will crop images to the set width and height you define, but this can be disabled in the settings under Advanced Settings.

Oh? Then what exactly did it mean by “crunching” when I dragged my images over into your plugin and why did the process compress my images so badly that the text within the image has so many compression lines that it is barely recognizable compared to the original source file?

    Hi @whane-the-whip

“crunching” is a WordPress term that’s used when uploading media. All that is happening (similar to when uploading to WordPress directly) is that the images are uploaded to the WordPress media library, then cropped to the dimensions set as the width / height of the slideshow (default 700×300).

You can adjust those values after the images are uploaded and press save to re-crop the images. Alternatively, under Advanced Settings you can disable cropping and it will use the full size images. (NB. cropping is on by default as most people do not optimize their images beforehand).

If the images are blurry, there are a few reasons. 1) The width x height are less than 700×300 and the system is trying to compensate, or 2. something else is manipulating the images (ex. another plugin or filter in the theme).

If you would like to debug the cause and continue using MetaSlider, please open a support ticket (as WordPress doesn’t want us debugging issues inside a review):

If you can put the slideshow on a test page I can usually tell what’s happening right away.

I see that the image size was adjusted and that lead to the poor image quality when seen on the site. I adjust the dimensions to the large size and it looks fine now. I’ve adjusted my rating to 4 stars for the plugin but 5 stars for the review since you took the time to explain in detail what was going on. Thank you.
