Attach Image from Gallery

All,

This would seem like a simple thing to do, but I’m certainly stomped. How do I go about attaching an image to a post when the image already exists in the gallery? As far as I can tell, if you want to use the same image for 8 posts – you have to upload/attach it 8 times (I’m not talking about insert into post – true attachments).

To be clear, the theme I’m using displays the image only if it’s attached – so URL won’t work in this case. Any thoughts or plugin I could use?
