I have created a staging site for my live site to test plugin updates on.

I am currently running version 7 of WooCommerce and would like to update to version 9.

My idea was to de-activate it, copy the new version over via FTP, and then re-activate it. However, after I de-activate it, I am left with a white screen and cannot get back into WP.

I have gone to the wp_options file and added woocommerce back into the active_plugins record and that fixes the white screen issue.

However, I don’t know why de-activating it gives me the white screen. Should I de-activate all other woocommerce related plugins first?

As for updating, would it just be best to hit the Update button and hope the automatic process goes through smoothly?

  • Hey @apg1912,

It sounds like there may be another plugin or function in the current theme that depends on WooCommerce being active. If that’s the case, then removing it would cause a white screen.

Typically updating via the dashboard works well. I would give that a try if this was my site.

Once everything is updated, you may want to do some investigating to see what’s causing the white screen when WooCommerce is deactivated. That way you’ll know and can possibly alter the code so the site doesn’t crash when WooCommerce isn’t active.

If we can help out, please let me know.

    Cheers

Thanks for the reply. I use about half a dozen plugins that are related to WooCommerce and so I guess one of those is upset about ‘losing’ WooCommerce.

I spoke to the hosting company about it, and as a result, I set up a staging site and WooCommerce was updated via WP-CLI, and so that is another option.

Now, I just need to give it a good testing before updating the live site.

    Hey @apg1912,

That sounds like a good plan. If you do run into any trouble, come back and let us know. We’d be happy to help out.

    Cheers
