• I tried to log into the backend of one of my WordPress websites but I always got redirected to the login form again. I tried another website – same result. It happened to 5 of 6 websites.

After some investigation I found out that I couldn’t log into WordPress websites that have a space in the user name. Even when trying the mail adress as login credentials.

I changed it with phpMyAdmin and login worked again.

So if somebody has the same problem: That might be a quick and dirty solution.

Can’t tell why WordPress behaves like that – I got kicked out of a backend where I already was logged in and nothing was updated or changed.

Thanks for the tip. That’s something to watch for. FWIW, spaces in login names works OK on my site, so the trouble could be server configuration or possibly a plugin validating login names differently than core WP.

Whether it’s allowed or not, I recommend as a good practice that login names follow the same rules as slugs: lower case alphanumeric and hyphen only, no other special or extended characters. There’s no “rule” to that effect. It helps ensure maximum compatibility in any environment.
