Cleaning out Uploads

Although the site I am working on currently has some 50 or so images listed in the Media Library, when I look at the site using FTP I see that in the wp-content – uploads folder there are many more old files, and under various dates and months (eg wp-content – uploads -2019 – 8) there are more. These are taking up unnecessary space.
Can I safely delete the ones that shouldn’t be there using FTP delete? I can’t see them via WordPress dashboard.

You’ll want to be careful but do delete what you wish. I would copy over to local storage anything I didn’t think I needed (just in case).
And I’d run the Broken Link Checker plugin to catch any problems I might have accidentally created.
