• I am starting a new blog, and I am running the lightword theme.

I am not fluent with any programming really, and especially not css. That being said, I am smart and pick things up quickly.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I might be able to widen the theme. I have big gray bars on each side, and I would like the area where my posts show up to be wider. Even if I could just adjust it out an inch or two each direction.

Is this possible? If so, can someone walk a newbie through how to do it?

    Thanks!

Other than that, a link to your site would help and an explanation of what you want to change.

I am a little bit embarrased to start sending people to the site right now, because it is very much in an embryonic state.

I am just finishing experimenting, and starting to think about getting valid content up.

oh well, the site can be found at https://www.c4central.com.

All I am trying to do is widen the area where the post and everything show up. Basically, move the sidebars each out a little further?

I don’t know the best way to describe it.

Thanks for your help…I’ll check out that link.

I’ve seen far, far, worse sites that were most definitely not supposed to be embryonic. ??

Not easy on that theme. There’s are quite a few images used within the header and top nav bar, so you’d need to re-do those to fit your new width. You’ve also got another image creating the background the main content area and a third in the footer to adjust as well.

There’s no quick CSS fix, I’m afraid.

So if I was pretty good with photoshop, and didn’t mind modifying the images, how would I got about it?

Thanks for the compliments on the site BTW. I have spent a fair bit of time on it and finally have it to the point where all the functionality and looks I want are there (aside from this width issue), and I can start working on the content.

With the following the product has, I think I will get around 2,500 users within the first 14 days of “letting it out of the bag”. I need to make sure it is ready for primetime.

Start by extending the width of #wrapper in the stylesheet to 900px or more. It’s currently set to 811px – which is the width of many of the graphical elements – so that should immediately give you an idea of the task ahead. There may also be 1 or two absolutely positioned elements that you might have to nudge to the right later on but I’d suggest you see how you go and, if you hit problems, post here again.

Check it out now, what do you think?

I got it about two inches wider.

Turns out it was easier than I thought.

Under theme settings there is an option for standard or wider. When I changed it to wider I got the look I was after!

    *slaps self in forhead*

    Thanks for the help anyways!

LOL! Some days, you just can’t see the wood for the trees. Been There. Done That.

    what do you think?

Definitely wider. My only concern is that, on a 1024 (or below) screen, the post dates are being pushed offleft by the negative margin so can’t be read. That’s always been my stumbling block when trying to build one of these left-tabbed themes together from scratch – getting it to respond to the screen resolution in a way that doesn’t cause breakage somewhere else.

I’ve abandoned the idea for now.
