• So my WordPress was working perfectly fine up until a few days ago. I have not even logged in between the time it was working and now, so I don’t think I’m the problem. To make it weirder, blog spammers are still commenting and I’m getting e-mail notifications about that. Also, the error notification I get has changed a few times (It used to say there was an error in the login page and now it says it’s in a line of the widgets page). The exact message I’m getting now is this:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/content/d/a/r/darkblueant/html/blog/wp-includes/default-widgets.php on line 40

Anyone know if I can fix this? I’m hoping it just works itself out…

  • What version of WordPress are you using? Sudden parse errors can be due to hacking.

    I think I’m using 2.8.1

I also really doubt that I’ve been hacked, since my blog is totally unknown. The only thing that has happened in the past week is that my host (goDaddy) almost canceled my account due to not being able to charge a credit card. Besides that, nothing has happened on my site. I haven’t even logged in.

    Hi,

Please try to reinstall the wp-includes folder along with all the files and folders which may resolve this issue.

    Thanks,

    Shane G.

    2.8.1 is vulnerable to hacking.

If blog spammers have found your site, it’s not unknown.

I’m not really sure how WordPress works, but if I reinstall everything, will I lose all my old posts?

Not if you backup your current database. If you are using Godaddy hosting then you also have access to PHPmyadmin. If you don’t know how to backup your DB using that then use a database backup plugin.

I tried reinstalling wp-includes. Now my page is blank. I’m going to try the rest of the folders.

Try a manual upgrade following these instructions:

How do I disable my plugins for the installation if I can’t access my admin panel?

You can disable plugins by deleting them with ftp. I’d recommend getting all fresh, updated copies of them anyway.

Okay, I’ll be trying a manual upgrade later. Thanks for trying to help.
