For the basic functionality, you don’t need any PHP skills. To create a custom theme that includes WPML theme localization calls, you should know PHP and be familiar with WP theme development principles.

I’ve gotten to the point where I’ve developed a fairly extensive QA site on versions from 1.X up to 1.5.1 so far and until I began customization of the WP install to perform various functions I really don’t think PHP came into the picture other than the hardcoded links. WPML works out of the box at this point as much as WordPress itself works out of the box. The basic amount of PHP used to handle the boilerplate functions like hard-coded links doesn’t really even require you to know PHP, just to copy and paste from their guide.

I take it you’re only using Latin-alphabet based languages then?

I’m having an absolute stinker of a time getting it to stay stable on a site with only two languages (English and Thai – an Asian non-Latin character set). The problem is obviously too difficult for Amir and the WPML team because after lengthy discussion in their forums they suddenly just marked the topic [Wont Fix] and left it at that.

Very disappointed, and so is my client.
