Upgrade failed – now admin unavailable

Have you tried carrying out a manual upgrade?

Hi,

-> Disable all the plugins either from FTP or from database
-> reinstall wp-admin and wp-includes folder along with all the files and folders.
-> redo the upgrade and upgrade your blog manually.

I guess I thought this kludgy bullshit was over when the auto-upgrade came out.

Think they’ll ever get it right? After 3 1/2 years of failed upgrades after doing everything right, I think I’ve concluded it’s time to find something that actually works.

Stuff happens when you deal with technology. An auto upgrade could have failed for a dozen reasons…11 of them having nothing to do with WP. A manual upgrade is reasonable.

I respectfully disagree. A manual upgrade is not reasonable when every upgrade I’ve done in 3 1/2 years has failed at least once and I’ve ended up reinstalling everything but the database. This forum is certainly proof that I’m not the only one. If a manual upgrade is reasonable, why is there a button to do it automatically? Don’t say “convenience” cuz it isn’t convenient to do stuff twice, first the easy way and then the hard way.

And no, I’m not computer ignorant – I’ve been a network admin for over 20 years. Doesn’t make me a WP guru but I do know how to follow directions.

1. Then you haven’t upgraded very often in the past 3 1/2 years, or
2. You have a very complex site with lots of hacks, outdated plugins, etc., or
3. Your not very good at upgrading, or
4. You’re exaggerating

Yes, it is for convenience…the convenience of those who are not technically savvy enough to do a manual upgrade. The auto-upgrade feature has made it as easy to upgrade as it is to post to a blog.

Then upgrading WP should be a piece of cake for you.

“Conveninence” I could accept if it worked.

Piece of cake? Close. Manual updates aren’t that difficult – did this one in about 15 minutes without a problem. My only issue is that the auto updates have never worked for me. I’d love to know why.

It could be a server config issue. Which is why I was curious as to whether you’d ever used another server.
