Sorry, can’t edit files with “..” in the name.

WordPress is installed in the ROOT folder of the website. I can upload and active plugins and access the settings option if one exists. However, if I go to the Manage Plugins page and attempt to “edit” any of the plugin, I see the following error message.
Sorry, can’t edit files with “..” in the name. If you are trying to edit a file in your WordPress home directory, you can just type the name of the file in.
Two bogus factors in relationship to that error.
1 – The link does not appear to have a “..” in it:
https://example.com/wp-admin/plugin-editor.php?file=akismet/akismet.php
2 – There is no option to enter the name of the file.
