Sidebar (Widget) in Pre-Made Theme – how to change copy underneath?

    I downloaded a pre-made theme. There is “About the Author” Widget / Sidebar built into the theme but I’m not sure how to add content to it. I went into the Theme folder and wrote copy and then uploaded to Filezilla but, whatever I did, it did not work. It’s asking me whether to override which I said “yes” to the newer source. But now it seems my bytes have doubled and nothing changed so perhaps that was not the right action. ??

  • No – I don’t think it was. Unless you are creating a new custom template file, it’s never a good idea to try and create something on your machine and then upload it via FTP. The idea is to create content through WordPress.

    Try going to Admin/Users/Your Profile, adding some details to the About Yourself/Biographical Info box and then updating your profile. My guess is that this text will then appear in your About the Author widget on the public site.

    Hi Esmi thanks so much for your response. Well I could do that and use WP widgets, the problem is that the pre-made widgets will still be there with no text under them, and they are listed first. There must be a way – that’s really the whole point – to fill in the existing theme widgets/Sidebar content. Hmmm… I can write to the creator I suppose. Oh & I tried what you suggested adding the copy under Your Profile and that did not appear in the “About the Author” widget. Thanks for the suggestion tho’!

    Oh, I figured it out. It’s under Appearance and then under Editor and then Edit Themes and that’s where you change the copy. So Esmi you were of course right that it was within the WordPress panel!
