    Hello,

Before downloading this plug in, I have some questions. Can you please help me understand..

    – What is a good standard for “smushing images”? Does smush have a target kb or reduction % it aims for?
    – How does this tool know how low to smush without losing quality?
    – Can sizes be set for images that will be used differently on the site, like a product photo versus a banner photo?
    – Will we need to continue to compress/optimize images in advance of uploading them and smushing them? Do we need to worry about an image being over smushed?
    – Are there file types that this will not compress?

    Curious,
    Jennifer

  • Hey Jennifer,

    Hope you’re well!

We can’t say any guaranteed kb or % because every image has its own properties. For example, if you are uploading your images already with compressing with some other tool it can be just a few kb or none. Or if you are uploading your camera photos without touching them, it can be a few Mb or 80%. So all depends on your images current status.

Smush is using some algorithms to define the image and optimize it based on the content. That algorithm trying to detect the best possible optimization level without losing visual quality. I am not sure how much we can reveal the algorithm but we can ping developer if you want ?? Also you can check image example from plugin page on our website https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/wp-smush-pro/

Smush won’t touch your image sizes, it will smush your thumbnails which they are generated by your themes/plugins from original uploaded files. So your original files will be untouched and optimize thumbnails without touching sizes. But we have “resize original images” option for free, and “smush original images” or “resize images based on container with CDN” options for paid version. That options can resize your images.

You don’t need to worry about smush two times, Smush will remember which images smushed or which one not.

Smush will compress PNG, JPEG and GIF files and Pro version can work with WebP too.

    Cheers,
    Oguz
