Pop-up annotations?

Hi, all. I’m about to publish a book-length manuscript using the CommentPress plugin, and as an academic book, it’s got a lot of footnotes. I really want those footnotes to appear on hover as small, non-ugly popups. The easiest way to do this is to use the acronym tag, of course, but I’d ideally like something a little prettier. Most of the hover-text plugins I’m finding are for regularly used acronym (i.e., to create a hover reading “WordPress” for all uses of “WP”), and as each footnote is different, that won’t work. If you have any suggestions, would you let me know? Many thanks! –KF
