I’ve been using the WordPress app to manage posts on the go for a long time. I recently enabled 2FA on my site, and now I can no longer upload media with my posts. I checked the “Skipped” option for “Require 2FA for XML-RPC call authentication” as instructed in the Login Security section of the Wordfence plugin, but it still does not work. I’ve tried setting this to “Required” and back to “Skipped” with the same results.

  • Hey @bradm413,

Just to be certain, does disabling Wordfence resolve the issue?

Can you please switch the Firewall into Learning Mode and let me know if it helps?

    Thanks,

Yes, as soon as I disabled Wordfence, I was able to upload.

I have now re-enabled Wordfence, and it’s in Learning Mode, but I still could not upload posts.

    Hey @bradm413,

Do you get any related entry in Live Traffic regarding this issue? Perhaps Blocked By Firewall entry for example? I would expect that Learning Mode would circumvent this, but it can’t hurt to ask.

Do you have the checkbox for Disable XML-RPC authentication checked?

Just to be certain, if you disable Two-Factor does it resolve the issue?

    Thanks,

    Gerroald

Thank you for your continued support on this!

I did not see anything in the Live Traffic section that was related to me trying to upload from the WP app.

I have Require 2FA for XML-RPC call authentication set to “Skipped”.

And yes, it works if I disable 2FA for my account.

    Thanks!

@wfgerald I just turned 2FA back on, and I can no longer upload media through the app. Send to be a direct correlation to the 2FA setting.

    Anyone still seeing this message?

I’m still having trouble with this. I’ve tried disabling other plugins, but the only time the WordPress app will work correctly now is if I disable 2FA. I also cannot access the Media area of the app anymore. It only shows a handful of images and not all of them, and I can’t upload any new images through the WP app.

I had tested a permission editing plugin a while back, but I ended up removing it. I then had a notification through Wordfence that my user account had been created outside of WordPress (which isn’t entirely true). I then created a new user account completely from scratch and associated my previous account’s content with my new account. Still can’t upload or view media.

I’m having the same issue. Can’t upload media with the app while Wordfence 2FA is enabled.

Ah! So I’m not the only one. I was feeling pretty lonely with a broken WP app. My site gets hit enough to where I don’t want to disable 2FA.

What have you tried in troubleshooting? I’ve disabled some plugins and created a new account but so success yet.

@wfgerald – hi, just checking to see if this was being looked into or if there’s anything I can do to help troubleshoot.

I made some progress on this issue. I uninstalled the JetPack plugin, and then I could upload media using the WordPress app with Wordfence 2FA enabled. I reinstalled the JetPack plugin, and then could no longer upload media using the WP app. I haven’t had a chance (yet) to go through all the JetPack settings and try disabling them one by one to see if there’s a particular feature that’s causing the conflict.

Maybe someone from the Wordfence team will see this and offer some advice.

    Thanks!

Here are the only things I have enabled in Jetpack:

      Security:

    • Downtime monitoring
    • Anti-spam (activated with valid API key
    • Performance:

    • nothing
    • Writing:

    • nothing
    • Sharing:

    • nothing
    • Discussion:

    • nothing
    • Traffic:

    • Site stats -> “Include a small chart in your admin bar with a 48-hour traffic snapshot”
    • “Hide the stats smiley face image
The image helps collect stats, but should work when hidden.”
    • Allow stats reports to be viewed by: Administrator

Well…I tried disabling those items and still couldn’t upload to the media library from the app.

Then I tried disabling the Jetpack plugin altogether, and still got the same results. I’m back to square one – 2FA from Wordfence being the only common thread, but I don’t want to disable that.

    @wfgerald

Im having the same issue. Wordfence 2fa seems to kill my use of the android app. And just like here the wordfence support doesn’t offer any real solution They just asked the same questions and go quiet like this thread.

This thread has been abandoned and so has another I’ve started. I’ll report this to www.remarpro.com. This is a defective plugin.
