Plugin is using https for domains which don’t have a secure cert

  • Hi – first of all thank you so much for this plugin, it was exactly what I needed when setting up a client’s site for them. Unfortunately at some point recently the plugin has updated and they are now having some problems. The main website is on https while all the other domains are not secure. This has always worked fine with the plugin, until recently.

    I’ve been made aware today that the mappings are using https when they should be using http, but it appears it is no longer possible to specify the protocol. The plugin page says it will detect the protocol, so I’m not sure why this is going wrong ??

    If you to go the page link (which I think should be attached to this post?) you’ll see the various blue buttons with event logos are the links. Ignore the first two, they are entirely separate sites, but the remaining 6 all go to domains mapped through the plugin – all of which should be http but are going to https ??

    Is there any way to force the protocol back to http please?

    hy,

    yes in the recent update we have decided to use the same protocol as the main page for the mapped pages as well. the “detect” – phrase may be misleading, sorry for that. we just mean that you won’t need to enter the protocol since it will use the same as the main page.

    one reason is, that in times of free ssl-certificates this shouldn’t cause any additional costs. the other reason is, that mixed environments (http/https) have often had troubles with the setup.

    i understand that this is a problem if you have had such a mixed environment running and want to ask you, if a free let’s encrypt certificate for these domains would be a way to go for you? we aim to have a simple interface and would not like to add extra switches/input fields for only very few people having the need for this.

    Thanks for letting me know, Matt. I’ll have to let my client know. I’m not sure if their host allows the free SSL certs but if they have to pay they’ll just have to do so I guess ?? Really appreciate the quick response!

    Many thanks ?? I know it’s an unusual case really and I’ve said to them for years they should have secure certs for all their domains. I’m now being asked to downgrade the plugin version to save having to get secure domains, will have to see if I have a previous one downloaded somewhere!

    Hi,

    I have the same issue. But my hoster doesn’t allow to set a SSL certificate for domains that are linked to the same document root like the main domain for which I have a SSL certificate. But this is necessary to use the multiple domain mapping.
    So I also have to switch back to an old version?

    this is interesting – i’ve never heard of a hoster with such restrictions… but yes, unfortunately switching back will be the easiest way in the meantime.

    if you stay subscribed to this thread, we will remind you when we have added functionality which will allow that again ??
