• Under the category of “Just Saying” and as an FYI to theme developers:

The Google Maps pricing structure (requiring a credit card on file to activate maps) is so developer unfriendly, I will be looking for themes that use alternatives to Google Maps whenever possible. I’m not going to put my payment info down for a client’s website and the process of getting clients to enter their own information is so problematic that it creates an enormous headache.

Try swapping it out with Open Street Maps. I’ve seen a lot more site using that lately.

I heartily second your motion. ??

Lots of plugins integrate with Google Maps, and it’s impossible to continue to run things under my Google account. And clients will never figure it out, even with tutorials.

What has this got to do with themes?
This is functionality, so it would only be found in plugins, not any themes in the WordPress repository.

Every commercial theme I have ever purchased that has a mapping function uses Google Maps. I’m assuming that’s a decision the theme developer makes – to use the Google Maps functionality.

We don’t allow that functionality in themes in the WordPress repository, which is what we discuss here.

Last time I faced that problem, I went to Google Maps, Share, Embed, copied the code and put it in a html widget. You could register a widget area for the html widget in the theme and insert that widget area where you like. You do not have the same formatting possibilites as with the API, but the map is there and for free.

Thanks to all! I’m assuming if the theme I’m using incorporates Google Maps, I can’t just swap that with Open Street maps without doing some significant revision of theme, correct?
