I am developing a Joomla site and want to add a subdomain that will be done in WordPress. I have installed WordPress on a subdomain of the Joomla site domain, but I’m getting a 500 server error when trying to access the front end or admin end.

I didn’t install a theme with the new WP installation, but I don’t think that should matter (since it says it’s optional in the installation procedure page). The Joomla site is working fine.

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you!

WP comes with themes already. By default a theme will already be active.

Make sure your URL matches your install to the subdomain folder.

Thanks Stef, yes that’s what I thought (about the theme).

The URL I’m trying to access it with is (example) https://wpsub.joomlasitedomain.com

If I just type https://joomlasitedomain.com it shows the Joomla site, no problem. I can login to it too.

In File Manager, I can see the directory for wpsub.joomlasitesomain.com in the root directory, and the joomlasitedomain.com directory is a separate directory. WordPress seems to be installed correctly in the wpsub… directory.

Got it. Here’s some information that might help to review. Make sure you’ve covered all the steps.

You placed WordPress into a sub-directory and that’s cool but did you map the subdomain to that subdirectory within your control panel?

Since you get a 500 error you might just stuff a simple HTML file in that subdirectory as index.html just to see if it answers from there (you might need to kill or rename your WordPress install’s index.php file for a bit).

Oh, and be careful you don’t kill your Joomla site’s index.php in the root.

One more question… did you get the installer response with a request for the database credentials or did you use a one-button installer?

Stef: That link goes to a page to show how to move a WP site *to* the root directory, which is not what I was trying to do.

In any case, I solved it – see my next reply. Thanks for your help!

JNashHawkins, thank you for the idea. I didn’t realize I had to do that through my hosting account (as opposed to the cPanel). I called my web host and they walked me through creating a new A-record for the subdomain in my hosting account, and it worked perfectly.

I also reinstalled Joomla to its own directory off of public_html and recreated the subdomain in a directory off of p_h as well. I successfully installed WordPress in the subdomain and the Joomla site remains intact.

Thanks very much for the help! ??

@evolvingdoor I thought it had several ways on there, my bad. Maybe I posted the wrong link. Happens. Sorry.

No worries. I appreciate the help. ??

As of now, it tells me it can’t find the subdomain nor the main website… try go to that DNS settings and fix it better?

Maybe the procedure I went through with my web host is similar to what you need to do. I went into my web hosting account (not cPanel), went to Domains and then Addon Domains (since the domain is registered externally, not with them).

I clicked the addon domain I was using and it showed the subdomains for that domain. Then I clicked the DNS tab.

I scrolled down past the nameservers and clicked the button for Advanced Options. This showed me a bunch of stuff I don’t pretend to understand ?? but the section I needed to use was called “A (Host)”. It showed a record there for the addon domain name. I had to Add a Record there that was [subdomain.addondomain.com]. I also entered the IP that was the same IP address as the addon domain. I was told to leave the TTL field as-is.

    I hope that helps!
