• I dislike the new blocks intensely, but am slowly learning to live with them – they make everything about wordpress harder to use.

However, there is one thing that is making me absolutely crazy. I use the code editor because using the blocks is so excruciatingly horrible, and I cannot tell you how many times I’ve started to add a link into my page, started typing <a href=…. gone over to another browser window to copy the URL, and bam! The editor deletes the rest of the page, everything after the partial anchor tag. It’s like the editor – even in “code mode” is looking for a closing anchor tag, not finding one and so just saying okay damn it, I’ll just delete the whole thing (including the rest of the content) in order to fix the missing closing anchor tag. But wait! It’s only missing because I hadn’t gotten to it yet.

I have lost content that I’ve typed now several times. This is an overly zealous editor! I’m in Code Mode!!! Assume I know what I’m doing and please please please don’t try to “fix” my HTML.

  • This sounds severe, so it seems like it would have been reported already. But then there might not be so many people using the HTML mode of the block editor.
It could be that there is a validation happening with the autosave, but it shouldn’t be removing your content.
You can look here to see if it’s reported:
    https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/
and report it if it isn’t.

Meanwhile, have you heard of the Classic Editor plugin?
