I am in the process of converting 4 sites hosted in various locations in a single network. So far I have completed 3 of the 4 but I have some issues with password resets.

The primary site if pfbarrett.uk and there are two subsites process-guru.net and oh-angus.uk.

I can log into wp-admin on the primary site. I can move between the network admin page and the regular dashboard for the primary site. As soon as I try to switch to either of the two subsites I am asked to log in again. I use the same email address and password as the primary, and I am told the password is incorrect.

So I press the Lost Password link, and I am taken to the prompt to enter my password. But no reset email is received.

The same process on the primary site generates reset email, which I can action, but the newly assigned password does not work on the subsites.

    I must be missing something?

  • I usually ask if the site is really a multisite or is it just a couple addon sites in Control Panel. I’ve had people insist their multiple sites were Multisite before which created even more confusion.

In your case what has probably happened is your network super admin isn’t exactly a user on your subsites.

Dashboard –> Network –> Sites will get you a list of sites on your network. If you’ll then select to edit one of the newly networked sites you’ll see a panel with users listed. You should be able to add or edit users for those additional sites from there.

The reason you can’t get a user password reset is there probably isn’t any users in those sites to match the email address so WordPress won’t send an email for a non-existent user. Otherwise, anyone could add a user that way and possibly compromise your sites.

    Hi JNash

Thanks for your reply. Mine is definitely a proper multisite setup. And all the sites have me as the superadmin, with the correct email address.

But I discovered the source of the problem – Shield security plugin. As soon as I removed that the problem disappeared. I am now in dialogue with the Shield developers.

Thanks for your response. You may not have solved the problem but you trigged the thought process which led to me solving it myself, which is as good as solving it, ??
