Must the text be inside the shortcode?

Hello,
Am I understanding correctly that the hidden text needs to be within the [read more]…[/read] code? Is it possible to place the entire shortcode in a regular blog post, after the first paragraph for example, such that clicking the Read More button expands the rest of the post (even if there are multiple paragraphs)? Thanks.
