    Hi all

I’ve searched throuh the forum for an answer to my question but have not found it. If the answer exists in this forum I would appreciate someone giving me the link to it.

Please excuse my ignorance, I’m completely new to all this.

I have self installed a wordpress blog. I downloaded the free smartftp software, however, it’s a trial version that expires in a few days so I also downloaded filezilla (as it’s unlimited so to speak).

I am unsure how to connect to filezilla. I know it asks me for the host id but I don’t know what it is. I have tried changing https://localhost/wordpress to ftp://localhost/wordpress but apparently I’m off the mark there as it needs to be .com?? Ugh, I’m so lost…

I also have no clue what my username and password are.

I followed this tutorial to self install wordpress https://geeksaresexy.blogspot.com/2006/06/installing-wordpress-locally-under.html
it uses MySQL (I think) and XAMPP Lite. I see that XAMPP already has FileZilla but when I select START it says that FileZilla FTP must be run as a service.

Also, I don’t know what my blog address is to allow other people to use it.

Summary: I need to know my Host, Username, and password for filezilla AND what is my blog address

Thank you in advance for helping such a confused newbie.

  • You don’t need an FTP program for local installs…

Go to the XAMPP website and read the documenation… there’s no reason you should be asking if you’ve read “the instructions”…

If you read and follow the instructions you’ll not need to keep asking questions of “how do i do X”….”why doesn’t X” and “what does X mean”…. etc…

Documentation exists for a reason… heck these forums wouldn’t be the same without the codex…

You’re right, I didn’t read all the documentation. I have followed your advice and I’m currently reading through the rest of it.

I realise now why I became so confused. I found that “self install wordpress” tutorial page through a “design your own wordpress theme” tutorial page… the theme design page says to download an ftp program.

Good to know I can just completely forget about fileZilla. I appreciate your help. Please remember that nobody is born knowing everything and newbies are prone to becoming confused with the quantity of information they have to learn.

    Cheers again.

Yes i know how it is, i was once there…

I’m still guilty of not reading properly half time, but then i’m a really impatient person..

Was simply stating the obvious… ??

    Hey,

perhaps you could shed some light on this too?
Please don’t think I haven’t tried to fix this by searching for hours through google… writing on here is a last resort… my brain is fuzz :S.

I already have all the php files I need for my blog (thanks to following a wonderful tutorial) and the basics for my css file.
Prior to today, all the editing I made to the css file resulted in the appropriate changes in my blog. Now nothing happens. Any idea why that could be?

Also, the only address I have for my blog is https://localhost/wordpress/ . How do I share my blog with others? Is there where the FTP program comes in? Do I not have a filehost like I think I have?

yes I do realise I lack a lot of knowledge in this area – all I wanted to do was design a nice original blog :P. Sadly none of it’s obvious to me yet because I don’t know what everything does.
