Status of 2.8 (beta or not)?

    I’m confused about the present state of WP 2.8 In the control panel, we get the message to upgrade to 2.8, but from the WP Blog I know that 2.8 was back to beta 2.

    Should I upgrade from 2.7.1 via the control panel?

    If 2.8 is back to beta, should it be available as a “stable” download.
