• So I finally figured out how to change the file modes in Filezilla. I am trying to use 766 so that I can modify the css file and save it. However, the page has not changed since I changed the mode. From what I understand from the directions, the edit themes page is supposed to change from having the “see Codex” warning below to having a save button. This has not happened. I tried 777 too, and the command did not work. Am I missing something?

  • Try deactivating all plugins and check to see if this resolves the problem. If it does, activate the plugins one by one – checking the Theme Editor after each re-activation – until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    I don’t have any plug-ins activated. :/

I always had problems trying to change permissions in Filezilla, maybe it’s the web hosts restrictions policies. Anyway if you can’t manage to edit the file the last option would be to download the css file and delete the server copy. Then open the downloaded copy and copy and paste the code to a new file with the same name and upload that to the server.

Hmmm… well here is the thing: the new version that I have copied and edited (with the same name) is already uploaded to my server. It is not overriding the original theme css file for whatever reason- Did you mean that I have to delete the file found in the wordpress editor?

The wordpress editor is showing you the css file only because it exists in your theme’s folder. It’s not like they are two different files. Just delete that file in theme’s folder and upload the new one.

No, only the new (edited) file is in the theme’s folder on my server.

Then your css did change when you edited it. There’s no upload/download when you edit files through the WordPress Editor. All changes are actually carried out on the relevant files on the server.

Incidentally, plugins can still be a problem when you’ve deactivated them. Some don’t appear to fully deactivate. Had a problem yesterday in which there were no active plugins but an old plugin still within the plugins folder. The site owner had to re-name the wp-content/plugins folder to stop the errors – which suggests that the old “inactive” plugin was the problem.

I am not sure what you mean by that. The only style.css file that I have on my server in the correct folder marked with the theme’s name is the version I edited. It would make the page look completely different than it does now, so it is obvious that it is not working for whatever reason. I understand that the files that are on my server should be controlling what the page looks like. That is why I am so confused.

Hmm…I don’t know a lot about plug-ins. Do you think that is my problem? I would just as soon not use the wp editor if I can upload my files directly to my server and get the same result- which seems to be the case. Except of course, it won’t work for me. ??

Okay, just for starters…I need someone to answer this question. Does it matter if you upload files via fttp by yourself or if you upload files using wordpress options? Because from what I understand- it doesn’t matter how your files get into your server, but what is in your server is what you get… And I just don’t understand how this can be true when I don’t have what is coming up as my blog even in my server!- The CSS I edited tells it to look quite different so I would know if it was working or not. Plus, I even checked the ONLY style.css file in the correct folder (WordPress/wp-content/themes/2Exquisite/style.css (and other necessary theme files). What is going on??? I have been asking questions on the forum for about 3 weeks now, and I still don’t get how to fix my problem. I am sorry that I am new to wordpress….Please help.

No it doesn’t matter how the files get uploaded as long as they get uploaded. Let me ask you this: do you have a cache-ing plugin running? If so then try deleting your cache.
